Vineyard Management

In 1999, Buddy Beck started Advanced Vineyard Systems for the purpose of managing grape vineyards for several vineyard owners in the area. John and Nancy McClintock, the proprietors of Vista Hills Vineyard, hired Buddy to plant and maintain their vineyard in 2002. For the past six years, Buddy, with the assistance of his gifted and dependable Advanced Vineyard Systems team, has planted over 45 acres of vines, provided the meticulous daily maintenance of the vines, and harvested the grapes for wine production each fall.

Prior to starting Advanced Vineyard Systems, Buddy was employed by prominent Willamette Valley Vineyard Domaine Drouhin as Vineyard Manager. Here, Buddy's expertise and knowledge of vineyard management and the wine industry matured, but the foundation was laid years prior. He achieved a Masters of Agriculture in Horticulture Degree from Oregon State University in 1988, finding work with The Dundee Wine Company as an Assistant Vineyard Manager for new vineyard development shortly thereafter. Buddy obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture from Southwest Texas State University in 1979.

While Buddy was at Domaine Drouhin, he hired Angel Martinez. The two worked together for three years before Buddy left and formed Advanced Vineyard Systems. Buddy, recognizing the excellent work ethic and knowledge of Angel, asked him to join him at his new venture. It was quite a step for Angel, born and raised in Veracruz, Mexico and having only just traveled to Oregon to work the grape harvest in 1996. Buddy has come to rely on Angel as the General Manager for Vista Hills.

Vista Hills has a formidable team creating wonderful Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris thanks to the marriage of invaluable vineyard management and carefully selected winemakers.
